I PRAY THAT HE KNOWS

One of My Favorite Photos of Mike, Ambassador Andrew Young and Shaw University Classmates

However, as it is written:
"No eye has seen, no ear has heard,

no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him."

1 Corinthians 2:9 (NIV)

“Life means to have something definite to do—a mission to fulfill—and in the measure in which we avoid setting our life to something, we make it empty. Human life, by its very nature, has to be dedicated to something.”
—Jose Ortega y Gasset (1883-1955); philosopher

I know our brains resemble curcuit boards during the course of a day. And what about our life time of brain power utilized as we navigate our lives through the maze of ups and downs, trials and triumphs? The night before I had really been too exhausted to focus on the online transcript my son was sharing. He stared at the screen reading his academic transcript. I promised myself that when I was alert the next morning I’d be sure to review the transcript. Instead I found myself at work and chatting with my husband, who inquired if I had seen the transcript and then forwarded the emailed attachment. Amazing technology!

When I reviewed our son’s college transcript (which I had never had an opportunity to review in his previous years of college) the courses and grades surprised me. I knew that this young man had absorbed a great deal of information and content knowledge throughout his life time and now during his undergraduate college stint which is fast concluding. His brain must have been reeling from the Calculus to the music theory and finally the political science courses. By reviewing Mike’s transcript I could visibly tell when he was struggling and stumbling academically and when he was soaring. As he approaches his final semester, his grades and work reflect that he’s confident, assured and comfortable with his academics. His steps must be sure, this must feel exhilarating, and he’s in the home stretch towards graduation!

I feel good about that and thankful to God for allowing me to witness this fete. I especially am mindful of the many phone conversations, the long silence and blurts of “I just don’t know Mom!” Oh my heart was so anxious after those conversations. I always tried to conclude our talks with an upbeat word, a prayer and scripture for reinforcement.

“Remember to read your Bible and pray Mike!
Yes you can accomplish this, you are well equipped to handle this.”

My heart is pleased and yes, our Lord is good!

But, I realize that the real education will occur outside of his comfort zone- the Shaw University comfort zone of familiarity for him and then the learning will take a new form and direction with the peaks and valleys and yes, the “hard knocks of life”.

What has he gained outside of the classroom that will carry him through the lean and difficult periods?

I pray he’s learned to call on the name of the Lord.

I pray he’s comfortable with getting in his secret prayer closet and imploring God until he’s confident about the choices he must make.

I pray that he has scriptures at arms reach or better yet -tucked in his heart which will be his compass and guide when he’s faced not only with hard choices, but for productive living.

I pray that when there’s not another human soul that he neither trusts, nor can confide in-that he’ll know that the God that dwells within him is more than enough.

I pray he has the wisdom and discernment to continually seek, trust and pray to God. Then act on God's unction.

I pray that he knows his life is a prayer of thanksgiving, not to be messed over.
I pray that he will reach forward, and actively seek out service to assist others for their benefit and God's glory.

And I pray that he’ll know, that he knows who’s he is and to whom he belongs-JESUS. His SOURCE, FRIEND, MOTHER, FATHER, COMFORTER AND CONFIDANTE!

I pray that he’ll remember the love that anchored him, the prayers that bathed him and the circle of family and friends that encourage(d) and yes, carried him.
I pray that he'll appreciate his limitations and frailties but applaud God's Omniscience and Omnipotence.

And, I pray that he values the scripture that my mother taught me and that spills from my mouth when nothing else will:

However, as it is written:

"No eye has seen,

no ear has heard,

no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him"

1 Corinthians 2:9 (NIV)

No matter what we do, now matter how well-prepared and well-grounded our children are, we can't help but have that little twinge in the pit our stomachs!

It sounds like your son is well on his way to being not only a good employee and a good Christian, but a good and strong person. He will survive, as we all have, with a few bumps and bruises.

Like his mother, though, he will minister powerfully to the world with his life, as God has ordained.

Blessings this Christmas season.
