Blessed and Still Climbing

That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. For our present troubles are quite small and won't last very long. Yet they produce for us an immeasurably great glory that will last forever!
2 Corinthians 4:16,17

As I descended the stairwell back to my office, the steps didn't feel so rigorous today I suppose it's because I am accustomed to climbing the double steep stairwell. It’s not only great exercise but the elevator is being repaired. Actually there are two sets of steps. The building I work in is being refurbished; at least the third floor is anyhow.

As I climbed the stairs for the second time this morning, I reflected on my husband’s urging that I ought to share my thoughts, in hope of inspiring others to not give up on life. At that moment I began to make a mental list of family and friends who have encountered the rough spots of life. This year and last year have been tremendous hurdles for them spiritually and physically. I don’t discount that I am also in that number. Know that I am so close to friends I consider them in this family circle of love. So as I climbed the stairwell I began to reflect on the real hurdles that have, I am sure tried their faith, caused them great anguish and surely must have made them feel they were suffocating from the pain. Silently we often suffer through. Admittedly these personal struggles are life’s strangle holds.

Some of them are currently going to weekly chemo therapy and anticipating weeks of radiation treatment, some of them now have failed kidney’s which result in weekly dialysis treatments, others like my family have had to bury a loved one-a toddler, a teen and a young adult all of which are resulting from an unexpected and oh so tragic death. Some wake up battling depression and isolation while others have to make the decision, do I or don't I go through the surgery on my heart or brain unsure of the outcome!

Oh Lord the issues of life have been stifling and this leg of the journey really is steep. But God! And the truth is that the real beauty is we who believe in Jesus have a lively hope and can report favorably we that are over comers.

The sun does stream through the often worn fabric of life. Our faith may waiver, our issues don’t magically disappear, but we move–sometimes at a snails pace assured that this is not the grand finale!

Our steps may be shortened, our hurdles numerous and our mountain top experiences few and far between but the fact remains that we are alive and breathing with a melody in our heart! There are moments when we understand that peace that passes all understanding does guard our hearts and minds! We won’t give in nor give up on God! What awaits us you ask? The answer of course: a renewed spirit and a resilient faith.

Oh friends and family we can rejoice and be confident in our blessings as we climb the stairwell of life that God’s word assures us in 2 Corinthians that He provides us with glorious power to push on and continue in his service no matter the struggles:

And so, since God in his mercy has given us this wonderful ministry, we never give up. 5 We don't go around preaching about ourselves; we preach Christ Jesus, the Lord. All we say about ourselves is that we are your servants because of what Jesus has done for us. 6 For God, who said, "Let there be light in the darkness," has made us understand that this light is the brightness of the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ. 7 But this precious treasure-this light and power that now shine within us-is held in perishable containers, that is, in our weak bodies. So everyone can see that our glorious power is from God and is not our own. 8 We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed and broken. We are perplexed, but we don't give up and quit. 9 We are hunted down, but God never abandons us. We get knocked down, but we get up again and keep going. 10 Through suffering, these bodies of ours constantly share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies...16 That is why we never give up.

New Living Translation, 2 Corinthians
