WE ARE CONNECTED IN THE ROUGH TIMES!
Photograph of Mural in Baltimore by Linda Mose Meadows
The young proprietor confessed in an apologetic tone that his family was facing difficulty and he now worked elsewhere during the day. He shared that financially they were having difficulty paying their mortgage and his elderly mother now covered the shop. This was a rough patch! Once again I knew well about mortgage woes. But, friends what really resonated in my spirit were the words wthe young man spoke: "But it’s going to be all right I guess!”
Without a doubt these are some of the most difficult times that this many people have encountered collectively in a very long while. It feels like more than a pinch, it’s often a strangle hold to stay afloat making our ends meet. Living in this world can be very hard! Yes, indeed it’s rough-it’s real, it’s personal hardships on an intimate level!

GOD IS REVEALING HIS INTENTIONS TOWARDS YOU: TAKE HEART & HAVE COURAGE!
7 “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Go out and tell the story.
Let it echo far and wide
Make them hear you.
Make them hear you.
Make them hear you!
Make them hear you.
That sometimes there are battles
Which are more than black or white.
Make them hear you.
Make them hear you.
But one thing he will never say
Is that I went quietly to my rest.
Go out and tell our story
To your daughters and your sons
Make them hear you.
Make them hear you.
Teach every child to raise his voice
And then, my brothers, then
Make them hear you.
Make them hear you.
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever. Psalm 23:6
Immediately I yelled, “Ricky please take our photo and be sure to get the words!” Jesus we receive that message! We looked at each other and began to simultaneously laugh with joy! We did a modest dance, but our joy was contagious! A soul train line would have really been fun.

STRIVING TO TRUST
Determined to write a devotional, I reached for a past article written for Urban Views Weekly, July 15, 2009 entitled : When You’re at a Crossroads, the Odds are with You. How appropriate for me at this juncture of my life. When I earnestly reflect on the stations of my life, many bittersweet, I shake my head in amazement. Lord I survived and am grateful for being transformed continually!
Yes, I am in a new place spiritually and physically. Divine growth spurts got here. At the time of my July 2009 writing we resided in Virginia and had gone home to Buffalo, New York to visit friends and family, secretly I wanted to return. For many years I was terribly home sick, I longed for a break from the numerous pain filled valley experiences, but blessed events also. Before the July 2009 article was birthed I sat at my dear friend, Renita’s home and marveled at a granddaughter whom I had only seen in photos.
This very busy little toddler so bright and rambunctious had very mature language skills which were matched with her determination and zeal. She zipped around the house searching for her princess clothes. She too was in search of something precious. Renita and I shared and caught up on past and present news- relevant to our lives. We exchanged pleasantries and then got to the heart matters that often surface after we comfortably settled into heart matters that can’t be overlooked. She said something like “Lin you’re living out your heart’s desire.” She was referencing my writing and published work. I hadn't thought of it that way. It just seemed that I was search of what seemed elusive-peace and contentment needed to make my life complete, but yet it felt impossible in a place that was far from home.
Well let’s fast forward, now I am seated at my dining room table in Orlando, Florida with lap top open and writing now for several other publications! I'm prayerful and very thankful-not so out of sorts. I'm expecting and anticipating further accomplishments and trusting that the fruition of what I long for will happen. Imagine my husband and I am now Floridians, feeling at home and excited about the future. It gives me goose bumps as my mind races and sifts through the numerous journeys that got us here. I am so pleased to be in this warm climate, a place of respite that seems to just swallow me in and assure me that change is surfacing.
My spirit is lifted and the heaviness that was so familiar has been disrobed like a heavy wool coat. Not that long ago, I was wondering do we pay the mortgage for this month or should we just pay the utilities instead and try to catch up in the following month? Too much anxiety! Yes, not that long ago I wondered (feeling bewildered) should I pack up my belongings and just retreat for home where familiar surroundings and an assured comfort zone of reliable family and friends could be counted on. But truth be told I would have missed out on the struggles, challenges and victories that were meant exclusively for me, for us. Living and surviving this life is not for the faint-hearted! I believe God is communicating with us this day my friends. As shared initially I thought I would submit an article I’d previously written but thank God I thought better of that! Instead I grabbed my devotional (Jesus Calling by Sarah Young) and then referenced scripture (Holy Bible New Living Translation). Here are the words and text that resonated in my spirit. The words spoke to my heart and gave me the direction needed:
STRIVE TO TRUST ME…. “I am sovereign over every aspect of your life; it is
possible to trust Me in all situations. Don’t waste energy regretting the way
things are or thinking about what might have been. Start at the present
moment-accepting things exactly as they are-and search for My way in the midst
of those circumstances.” Psalm 52:8; Proverbs 3:5-6
I will always trust in God's unfailing love.
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight.

FIVE STAR REVIEW- AFRICAN AMERICANS IN SANFORD

Not only is the sepia toned bookcover eye catching, but this selected photo from yesteryear exudes joy and appreciation! As we delved into the book: African Americans of Sanford, I fondly thought of the many photos I pored over with my Grand pop Ellsworth as he explained who was who! For a moment I was seated with Grand pop and Cousin Anna in Darnestown reminiscing about our beloved family and friends! Those worn photos entreated us a flood of precious memories that seemed to take us from here to there. These are precious moments I hold on to fondly. Reminiscing about family, love and life experiences keeps us connected and grounded. In our spirit we realize what matters.
Accomplished Storyteller, Author and Historian: Valada Parker Flewellyn has done an exemplary job gathering the many photos, researching family history and devoting precious time and energy in chronicling many of Stanford's milestones. The contents of her work will have you exploring and wondering about those featured and where their zest for living originated. Inquiring minds want to know how they came to live in Florida and if they are alive, where are they now and how have their lives evolved? If you appreciate history, family photos and the memories connected to cherished loved ones, this is indeed the book for you!
Kudos to Mrs. Valada Parker Flewellyn for embracing and authoring: African Americans of Sanford! Her work is a beautiful account of important events and those connected to them. This is indeed a priceless document of a rich history of Floridians, proud families, individuals who contributed greatly to society and the larger community! These folks left their indelible imprints on the landscapes of Sanford!
Being new to Central Florida I appreciate learning about these trailblazers that helped bridge the numerous disparity gaps and encouraged many to persevere. These educators, business owners, doctors, lawyers, and many everyday folks were passionate community builders giving their time and talents in enumerable ways! Their contributions are evidenced today! Many of them are continuing the legacy and/or have passed the progressive torch urging us to not abandon serving others! The impact has touched the generations that are graciously benefiting. Oh my friends we must not forget the sacrifices made!
In my estimation African Americans in Sanford was surely a labor of love. We tremendously appreciate this wonderful literary experience; readers are beckoned to model purposeful living with adopting service as a personal hallmark! My family cherishes this new addition of: African Americans of Sanford to our personal heritage library collection! Thank you to Mrs. Flewellyn and those she partnered with for erecting this diligent testament! I pray others will acquire this literary treasure and share the legacy of igniting hope! Yes, you never know who you'll meet, or run into while visiting Sanford and the surrounding community!
Write on Valada, thank you for your journey to Sanford and beyond, we await future treasures! There’s so much to appreciate, read, learn and share! Come on and grab hold of your 5 stars, job well done!

IT'S A HAPPY NEW YEAR LEARNING NEW HABITS!

I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory.
Psalm 63:2
It was amazing for me to witness how attentive the young college folks in my home were. It was Christmas break and they seemed to relax with the television on, lap tops plugged in and their smart phones in hand. They seemed hypnotized by one or the other, possibly mesmerized is more appropriate!
They huddled together and listened intently to the television and even commented in unison about the antics of several of the "stars" during a particular episode of some "Reality" show that I knew nothing of. I immediately wondered whose reality was this really? The star's strained tones, always boisterous, obnoxious behavior and argumentative conversations were exhausting.
But my focus shifted from the tirades when women began to speak at length about making New Year’s Resolutions, now that got my immediate attention. Admittedly I am out of touch with the recent line-up with this new crop of celebs on these reality shows, but their over dramatic personalities and one sided perspectives appeared very loop-sided, self serving, slanted and greedy for the most part. But it's not my call, not my "Reality" production, and certainly not my lifestyle being showcased. Let’s give each other a high five on that reality! But from what I could discern their rituals or habits have a lot to be desired. Maybe that was the fascination with why we watch these unscripted series. Or are they? But distinctly I heard (sensed their) preceived DEFEAT, with their pronouncements regarding and maintaining their New Year’s Resolutions.
Each person boldly shared with convincing gestures where they would and wouldn't frequent, what they planned on acquiring and the things that they'd not tolerate anymore. But no sooner than those pronouncements spilled from their mouths they shared that they realized that their resolutions were already going to be short lived (just like the standard resolutions that so many of us make). Often it's all for not. But I too have been there and done that! You know made an elaborate plan and strategy for the New Year which failed. So often we mean well, but our well planned out resolutions are short lived. Our stamina and commitment seems fleeting and we’re back to our old habits. The resolutions are gone bye-bye and generally don’t make it through the week. As we mature we dispense with this practice and it is back to business as usual! But something is really missing! Now I am trying to make no promises to myself or others that I sense are already futile. But I learned of a Divine source that pushes and prompts me! No resolution can do that! So after my good chuckle at the confusing reality show I realized that it was time to refocus, time to quiet myself, read , reflect, pray and get some spiritual direction. Is that you also? Later that morning I reached for a new addition to my inspirational library and read the following from Jesus Calling-Enjoying Peace in His Presence by Sarah Young.
"I WANT YOU TO LEARN A NEW HABIT.
Try saying, “I trust You, Jesus" in
response to whatever happens to you. If there is time to think about whom I am
in all My Power and Glory; ponder also the depth and breadth of My Love for you.
This simple practice will help you see me in every situation, acknowledging my
sovereign control over the universe. When you view events from this
perspective-through the Light of my universal Presence-fear loses its grip on
you. Adverse circumstances become growth opportunities when you affirm your
trust in Me no matter what. You receive blessings gratefully, realizing they
flow directly from My hand of grace. Your continual assertion of trusting Me
will strengthen our relationship and keep you close to Me. Psalm 63:2; Isaiah
40:10-11; Psalm 139:7-10"
I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory.
Psalm 63:2 (NIV)
See, the Sovereign LORD comes with power, and he rules with a mighty arm. See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him. He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young. Isaiah 40:10-11 (NIV)
Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, 10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. Psalm 139:7-10 (NIV)
