IT'S A HAPPY NEW YEAR LEARNING NEW HABITS!

It was amazing for me to witness how attentive the young college folks in my home were. It was Christmas break and they seemed to relax with the television on, lap tops plugged in and their smart phones in hand. They seemed hypnotized by one or the other, possibly mesmerized is more appropriate!

They huddled together and listened intently to the television and even commented in unison about the antics of several of the "stars" during a particular episode of some "Reality" show that I knew nothing of. I immediately wondered whose reality was this really? The star's strained tones, always boisterous, obnoxious behavior and argumentative conversations were exhausting.

But my focus shifted from the tirades when women began to speak at length about making New Year’s Resolutions, now that got my immediate attention. Admittedly I am out of touch with the recent line-up with this new crop of celebs on these reality shows, but their over dramatic personalities and one sided perspectives appeared very loop-sided, self serving, slanted and greedy for the most part. But it's not my call, not my "Reality" production, and certainly not my lifestyle being showcased. Let’s give each other a high five on that reality! But from what I could discern their rituals or habits have a lot to be desired. Maybe that was the fascination with why we watch these unscripted series. Or are they? But distinctly I heard (sensed their) preceived DEFEAT, with their pronouncements regarding and maintaining their New Year’s Resolutions.

Each person boldly shared with convincing gestures where they would and wouldn't frequent, what they planned on acquiring and the things that they'd not tolerate anymore. But no sooner than those pronouncements spilled from their mouths they shared that they realized that their resolutions were already going to be short lived (just like the standard resolutions that so many of us make). Often it's all for not. But I too have been there and done that! You know made an elaborate plan and strategy for the New Year which failed. So often we mean well, but our well planned out resolutions are short lived. Our stamina and commitment seems fleeting and we’re back to our old habits. The resolutions are gone bye-bye and generally don’t make it through the week. As we mature we dispense with this practice and it is back to business as usual! But something is really missing! Now I am trying to make no promises to myself or others that I sense are already futile. But I learned of a Divine source that pushes and prompts me! No resolution can do that! So after my good chuckle at the confusing reality show I realized that it was time to refocus, time to quiet myself, read , reflect, pray and get some spiritual direction. Is that you also? Later that morning I reached for a new addition to my inspirational library and read the following from Jesus Calling-Enjoying Peace in His Presence by Sarah Young.

"I WANT YOU TO LEARN A NEW HABIT.

Try saying, “I trust You, Jesus" in
response to whatever happens to you. If there is time to think about whom I am
in all My Power and Glory; ponder also the depth and breadth of My Love for you.
This simple practice will help you see me in every situation, acknowledging my
sovereign control over the universe. When you view events from this
perspective-through the Light of my universal Presence-fear loses its grip on
you. Adverse circumstances become growth opportunities when you affirm your
trust in Me no matter what. You receive blessings gratefully, realizing they
flow directly from My hand of grace. Your continual assertion of trusting Me
will strengthen our relationship and keep you close to Me. Psalm 63:2; Isaiah
40:10-11; Psalm 139:7-10"

I suspect the Holy Spirit has also given you goose bumps. God is speaking to us! It's clear why so many of our resolutions don't make it out of the gate-our old habits win! These habits push God aside! We've overlooked the most crucial ingredient of getting in the habit of remembering and actively trusting Jehovah, our Author and Creator of the universe. He’s the very One-the I Am that has birthed our hopes, dreams and desires. There is no plan if God is not a part of it.

There can be no hope of getting through the tough obstacles if we've not carried the baton of faith, the powerful Holy Scripture in our hearts/minds and love for being a child of the most High God. We can't make it and possibly believe that our natural stamina will sustain us in this world!

There’s nothing that can replace, refresh and restore us like Jesus! If you have one resolution let that be to learn a new habit of entrusting ourselves and all that concerns us to Jesus. Today friends, tell yourselves, your loved ones, and Him: "I trust you Lord! I am in your capable and wonderful care!" Now that’s a resolution that will remain, let’s get in the habit! Happy New Year everyone!

WordPress.com presented an annual report of my blog: The Blessedness of Believing A Devotional Journey of Life's Lessons and God's Promises. This was a capsule of my 2011 blogging and a great way to jumpstart the new year. I tremendously appreciated their Happy New Year notice and just wanted to spread some encouragemet to the seasoned blogger and to those that are possibly embarking upon a new journey of blogging! It was a report with all the bells and whistles, I just couldn't capture that here but felt that it was such a fun and beneficial piece of news that I had to share it!

It's time to celebrate the Christ child's birth, and it's also a season for reflection and joy. In my estimation, it's really a time to give spiritual birth to new possibilities, new endeavors and new insights. It's time to unearth dreams and embrace realities yet to be seen. I believe we endeavor to capture the essence of the Christmas Spirit, Christ in our decorations, traditions, celebrations and rituals.

What would a holiday be without music to uplift and enlighten us? Music can take us there, there to a place when our minds conceive what our hearts wish to convey. We love all that Christmas represents: goodwill and God's love for us! It's a time to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, gather with our cherished loved ones, exchange presents and commemorate the greatest gift that God has given us!

HOPE, PREPARE, JOY, LOVE-IT'S THE SEASON OF ADVENT!

“Behold, the virgin shall become pregnant and give birth to a Son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel--which, when translated, means, God with us” (Matthew 1:23, AMP).

This beautiful banner hangs in the narthex of Christ Church Cathedral in Nassau, New Providence, The Bahamas! Not only was the church impressive, but the banner expressed perfectly the sentiment of this joyous season of ADVENT.

Lord, you bring light into our darkness.

My spirit says, "Yes!" "Thank you Lord for this wonderful Christmas Season!"

We express HOPE for the coming of our King, Jesus Christ!

We PREPARE with anticipation of being a part of a royal priesthood which saves us from a dismal and dreadful existence.

We understand that we have a safety net that cradles us from destruction and sin.

REFOCUSING WITH A HEART OF THANKSGIVING!

Our Thanksgiving season is upon us and I didn't want to miss sharing what I contend is an opportunity to express in this moment that it's time to get in in gear. Step away from life's difficulties for a moment and get in gear with a new mindset to refocus our priorities and give God thanks for all He's done. It's time to get moving! So friends this is a repost, but I know that I know that it's time to think about the goodness of the Lord as we shift onward and upward, refocusing on the things that matter most trusting that God has a timely message just for you. Rejoice and enjoy my friends...

I had my eyes on him and I was so glad I did! I was the observant co-pilot, the “passenger side” driver. By the way friends I designated myself to be on the lookout for those anxious holiday drivers. You've seen them moving too fast and not paying attention! Ricky was behind the steering wheel. When he mashed the brakes, my foot mirrored his actions. We were laughing and chatting as we traveled in Alexandria, VA. It was obvious that the driver in front of us was distracted. How did I know he was distracted? His swerving was a great indicator that something was amiss! With insistance I said, “Honey watch out for that guy! Let’s stay far away from him!”

As we moved into the next lane, the erratic driver attempted to switch lanes and move in our space. Our horn startled him, I then witnessed this driver holding his cell phone close to his ear. He was talking nonstop, looking quite comfortable behind his steering wheel. It apeared as though he was very involved in a conversation that occupied his entire attention. I believe God was demonstrating something for us.

Just possibly this message is confirmation that the Holy Spirit desires that we refocus today.

As we sat in the left turning lane awaiting the green traffic signal then proceeding, we heard a terrible sound that two cars make when there’s been a collision. I was relieved that our vehicle hadn’t felt the physical impact. But I knew someone had been very shaken up! The traffic light changed from red to green and as we proceeded through the intersection I looked over my shoulder and recognized that the guy on the cell phone was involved. Apparently he rear ended the SUV in front of him. I surmised that the driver in the vehicle in front of him hadn't moved because the traffic light hadn't changed yet. His front hood appeared to look like a crumpled aluminum "pop" can. Surely he was dazed, his negligent driving skills had caused great distress.

My heart sank for the innocent party involved in this accident. It's evident that the perpetrator of the accident paid no attention to the obvious stationary car. The guy on the cell phone was too caught up in his conversation-his world! He should have let it go! Let the phone go until he arrived at his destination.

There are some things we can’t do simultaneously! Texting and talking while driving are at the top of my list. As this year wraps up it’s important to acknowledge what we aren’t able to do effectively handle and act according. It’s a matter of refocusing, refocusing in order to pay careful attention to the important matters, especially those we are currently involved in. Lord knows it makes for a better day! It's clear we don't operate in a vacuum. I'm sure you agree that our actions do effect others!

Several thoughts regading REFOCUSING come to mind:

What impressions are we leaving behind?

Those we come into contact with should be glad we were in their presence, are they?

Reflect abd recall on what happens when we are moving hastily? In retrospect were the outcomes worth it?

Peacefully moving forward, is that a foreign concept?
Have you considered it?

Are you enjoying the ride-your life, the journey you are currently experiencing? What happens when our destination is no longer the primary goal?

Take heart, we've all experienced unexpected hardships. What was the lesson?

What happens when we get stuck in the past and drag our feet in moving forward?

Do you know "atmosphere changers" that stir up hurt and confusion? Could they have possibly handled things in a better way?

How important is it to pay attention to our surroundngs, our loved ones and the things in life that matter most?

Friends as we reflect on those questions, let's be encouraged in our spirits to refocus our energies and time to first seek divine guidance; continually praying for God's will over us and what concerns His will for our lives! Yes, I'd like to believe that God is moving in our hearts to accomplish wonderful things, if we just refocus!

THINK WHATEVER YOU WISH!

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

My parting words to my friend, Chappelle were “Keep your head up master sculptor! I love you!” The words master sculptor must have resonated in Chappelle’s spirit-I could feel the beams of his smile radiate through the cell phone. Surely this remark must have touched my friends’ heart, I meant what I said.

That morning’s mission was to walk and purchase some additional hand soap. My dear friend phoned while I was perusing the isles of Dollar General for liquid soaps only (that’s what I told myself), but curiosity pulled me towards the house wares and whatever else caught my eye. When the cell phone rang I was glad that in this instance I remembered my one purchase pledge and answered the call. It was spontaneous, as soon as we heard each others voice joyous laughter ensued. We were having such a great time conversing I was oblivious to the other meandering customers. Their stares were my barometer for toning the laughter way down. I realized that I was having too much fun and speaking much too loudly for public surroundings, but I couldn’t resist. We began to talk and chuckle about many things. Laughter really erupted when he shared that his house seemed to be in worse shape after a certain cleaning crew arrived. Their house cleaning escapades were futile and down right comical! As the saying goes, “Busted!” Chappelle knew their antics and hated reporting them, but oh well they were wrong for guising laziness as productivity. They tried to convince Chappelle otherwise. We laughed about these charades and concurred that his not having sight didn’t negate his intuitive nature and skills for divulging the truth.

But I suspect that the real objective of this conversation was to remind my friend that he is an accomplished artisan and more importantly that he is fearfully and wonderfully made. These revelatory words needed to fall on my own ears and transform my thinking. The Holy Spirit obviously wanted us to connect. It was a refreshing reminder about how the Lord has fashioned us. Chatting on the cell phone-just enjoying the movement of walking and noticing the Christmas merchandise displayed much too soon, Chappelle said to me that this was a day for strolling and not falling for any foolishness. He hit the nail on the head. In my spirit I wanted to take my time and not be anxious and that’s just what I intended on doing-strolling outdoors first, through the shopping center complex, then down the store isles, and back home from my morning walk.

As I walked down the main thoroughfare it was also my intention to pay attention to my surroundings, to be appreciative of the moment and not hastily move. So initially I ventured up the street noticing what I believed was the frantic motorist’s intent on driving over top the other. It was comical, but sad how these hurried motorists deliberately were tailgating, almost rear ending and colliding. Continuing my walk I observed my neighbor’s overgrown and manicured landscapes with varying shades of green, and marveled at the variety of snaking flower vines that crept up the trees and hung heavily with the tree branches. There was no shortage of lush plant life. The scenery truly was beautiful! How I wished I had had my camera.

The sun shown brightly but didn’t scorch me and for that I was extremely pleased. It felt good to be free. It was indeed a nature day spa experience. It was rejuvenating, my soul’s muscles were flexing! I was able to breathe, stroll and witness nature’s glory! Oh how sweet it was my friends to be given the opportunity to applaud my surroundings and not be rude, rushed, mentally immobile, burdened down, pulled and consumed with worries!

I realize that now it’s our choice on how we choose to seize our moments, but it ain’t easy. Yes, I meant ain’t! Feeling encouraged? I suspect there’s a heightened realization and we are more confident-hopeful, because our thinking and personal direction aren’t isolated regarding our capabilities. The more I’ve been able to actively carve out time to read God’s word, pray, focus and devote myself to staying connected to the tree of life- partaking in devotional enrichment, the slower my exhausting pace is and the more I appreciate my connection to our loving Savior Jesus Christ. I trust that you’ve found this to be accurate also?

As Chappelle fittingly stated, “Linda, it’s a day for strolling!”

Had Chappelle and I continued our conversation I would have enthusiastically encouraged him to stroll on to the library or venture on to his favorite bookstore and acquire this book on tape or in Braille: The Three Battlegrounds (An In-depth view of the three arenas of spiritual warfare, the mind, the church and heavenly places) by Francis Frangipane. I know, that I know that it was no coincidence that I’d rediscover a book that seemed to float from my inspirational shelf to my kitchen table and finally land on my “good intention” reading pile-grabbing my attention. This book has broadened my understanding of strongholds. Just like Chappelle’s former house cleaners the enemy intends to dupe us regarding God’s intended plans for all that concerns us. But thank goodness that darkness can’t prevail! It’s clearer to me now that our clouded thinking, the roadblocks, mixed messages that intentionally halt and hurt are dangerous strongholds. But there is good news my friends, victory is attainable! Often the positive direction we long for can be found within arm’s reach.

The power lies within us to seek out the truth and gain clarity about spiritual warfare maneuvers. Remember the spiritual battle we face will cause us to stumble and not stroll.
The demonic design is an arrangement to confound, distract and confuse us with contaminated thinking that diminishes our worth! But the truth about our royalty lies in God’s word. It starts with consulting the Holy Scripture and embracing the Lord’s instructions. Our shelves may also contain many spirit-led words that may help us gain new perspectives for more rewarding lives. The Holy Spirit has charged us with fully embracing God’s promises for a rewarding life. Let’s begin to boldly and honestly examine our thinking and ask God to reveal what our strongholds are (i.e. envy, bitterness, depression, anger, procrastination, __________ fill in the blank, etc.) which hinder God’s perfect plan for us.

Be assured that the love of God will turn the tide for abundant living with unsuspecting extraordinary outcomes. Oh I am so grateful for God’s love and the depth of it that keeps us buoyant as we travel this earthly and spiritual plain.

IT'S TIME TO DO SOMETHING NEW!

I realize that it's really no accident that often I catch television programming at the right time. A world series winning game, the NBA finals, and/or a PBS series may be airing and is so riveting that it allows me stretch my outlook or provide me a brand new perspective on world events. Not to mention some super duper sports events is occuring that I would have hated to miss! So I knew it was surely providential that I witness the crowning of Miss Angola as Miss Universe and then later on check out America’s Got Talent on the internet and learn more about the winner and other contestants. You wonder the correlation? Well, I believe it has to do with celebrating the underdog or my inkling towards appreciating another one of life's lesson that in this life expecting the unexpected is the norm (at least for me). Sidebar: dealing with the unexpected gracefully is my challenge. It may irritate loved ones watching television with you, but it pays to channel surf-treats await us!

You never know what’s being broadcasted that was intended to delight and lift your spirit. It’s like being a little kid, you really don’t want to miss out!
I am sorry to learn about the most recent controversy with Miss Angola-Miss Universe. But it was indeed a celebratory moment seeing the crowning.

Today, I choose to focus on another winner of the 2011 America’s Got Talent Contest. There was an elephant in the room; it was so big, so obvious that it sat on the heads of the judges, especially the one who openly revealed that he believed that when he saw the contestant it was going to be a “total train wreck”. Mind you this was the furthest thing from the truth, but it was his belief system. The America’s Got Talent Judges had no clue what was about to occur. One particular judge openly had to recount and gobble each negative verbal morsel regarding what he said and believed.

Contestant: Landau Eugene Murphy Jr.’s first taped audition was an eye opener and heart fixer regarding his passion and capabilities. God was in the details. His vocation and life style weren’t necessarily a hard luck story but one that was evidenced by humble beginnings for this 36 year old man. The Youtube video below contains all the ingredients about how folks can have it all wrong about your talent(s), skill set(s) and gift(s). Those authorized experts usually have a limited scope of knowledge about whom they are judging. Consequently the predictions are way off, they miss the mark and their forecasts are generally unfair. If we are not careful these pronouncements can color our thinking! But it’s a matter of whom we choose to believe. Thank God we do understand and are aware that our capabilities are innumerable.

A break, a chance-that’s what we yearn for! Mr. Murphy beautifully has shown us that exposure and a leap of faith will unlock an armored door to phenomenal possibilities! He is our proof in the pudding that the world likes to rubber stamp and pigeon hole those that fit a stereotypical template. But these narrow minded individuals really don’t have a clue. Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. had the audacity to enjoy singing Frank Sinatra and dared to showcase an outstanding performance of Sinatra’s signature songs. Mr. Murphy boldly elected to go against the grain of his contemporaries. He relinquished singing familiar pop culture lyrics with provocative dancers to win over the audience and judges. Oh my friends Landau confidently sang, took a great chance and soared with his musical rendition in the style of the master crooner Frank Sinatra. Frank Sinatra is not necessarily known, appreciated, nor admired by many young entertainers. But God!

When we are stepping out on faith there is no need to be fearful, God had given us love and a sound mind!

We are fearfully and wonderfully made, so when God gives us the courage to complete something, we shouldn’t hesitate. As Nike says, “Just do it!” The clock is ticking let's get moving!

He knows the plans He has for us, end of subject!

So with those bold truths, the Holy Spirit gives us the muscle and stamina to handle the mundane things of life. It’s the humble, small things, the uneventful day to day grind that is required until our change occurs. And in our hearts if we hold fast and do not waver in faith, inevitably we’ll experience an awakening. No this awakening may not be a star stunned contract, but it won’t make us ashamed. We’ll see a shift, a divine and brilliant plan unfold.

The chief architect, Jehovah lays the landscape (with key personnel/advisors in place to assist us) and God gives us the desire to cultivate our gifts. We too realize that it’s urgent to get moving with deliberate action and in time, in due season our gifts will make room for us! Surely Landau knew in his heart what he deeply yearned for and I am confident that that must have been the spark needed to catapult him to an opportune destination towards his hearts desire. Before long he realized his dreams as winner of the 2011 America’s Got Talent. It took work and fortitude to get to this audition. I bet it was more than just purchasing a train ticket or hopping on the Greyhound or Mega Bus? It probably meant tremendous sacrifice. He detailed and washed cars for a living, so we know that his finances were meager.

Good news flash: it’s outdated history regarding Landau washing cars for his living. I feel it in my spirit that he must have glimpsed a sweet taste of glory divine as he scrubbed the hubcaps, pushed through soap suds and hosed down countless cars. So with that in mind, what remains in your view? What are you long for, expecting, anticipating? Landau’s won America’s Got Talent 2011. We can win also! It starts with a renewed outlook! Oh friends God wants us to know that our future is before us! Hold on! Hold on to hope!

My friends, this stellar crooner can look back and not wonder how he made it through. Let’s salute him, applaud his tenacity and Thank God that he’s a modern day example of a possibility thinker with great faith! Praise God, praise God from whom all blessings flow! Commissioned and Revived!

Do you remember these contemporary gospel groups: Men of Standard and Commissioned? I sure do love their ministries. I'm Standing In Your Will is the song that just seems to hang on in my spirit! Visit Youtube and have a personal praise fest! Rock and praise God with the gospel musical explosion of these balladeers. Several of them have ventured out and made solo careers for themselves. It's evident their sure foundation remains in Jesus Christ. Their lyrics still continue to encourage my heart!

Oh my, there were many early morning prayer and worship opportunities when I lived in Buffalo that I’d beat a path to Calvary Church now Elim and partake in a spiritual revival. This was before I reported to work at 8am! The revival was in the form of an early morning corporate devotional opportunity to engage in spirit filled prayer, praise and worship – invariably a song by Commissioned would be sung. And my friends it was all over but the shout!
You had to be there to experience it! Powerful! Yes, theses were powerful celebratory appointments with God!

This morning I am crisscrossing back down memory lane in my midmorning praise and worship thanks to Youtube, my holy scripture, a heartfelt prayer crafted with affirmations of scripture. And wouldn't you know it, some sweet memories of home would result. It's a warm 90 plus degrees outdoors now. No fret about warming up my car because of the frigid weather with icy and snowy roads to navigate. Yep, no beloved friends to squeeze into packed pews with, and no anointed psalmist to usher us into that inner sanctum. But, worship still occurs!

Thanks be to God, I am not alone as I sit in my kitchen reflecting and realizing that God dwells with me. There's revelation that I have the Holy Spirit. You too? This is a new level of praise and worship, quite intimate, it's a phenomenal gift. It's my opportune time to draw closer to Jesus. It’s some years later since Elim, and instead of congregating with others, I now find myself carving out me time daily with Jesus-reading my morning devotionals of The Blessedness of Believing, A Devotional Journey of Life's Lessons and God’s Promises by none other-me, Linda Mose Meadows (His Power At Work Within Us pg. 220) which celebrates our reliance on God and God’s divine power and love within us. I once again realize that in this new leg of my journey, that the Paraclete (Holy Spirit) abides, remains, revives, restores and renews my/our weary beings. Yes, we have a beautiful companion, a loving protector! We are not alone and can hold dear in our hearts those former days of biblical teachings and worship experiences which were designed to prepare us for these complex present days and moments ahead. Today’s readings are love notes that strengthen my soul. My spirit utters, "I'm going to make it! I'll survive this!" The Holy Spirit whispers through prayer and scripture that I am connected to the vine, my branches will not wither, droop and die in the heat of the day because of the divine commission and the blessed pronouncement that God’s presence is with me and you my friends!

You also can grab hold of this intimacy! Come on and be revived, tuck the scriptures in your heart! Dance in your prayer closets, your living rooms, close the doors to your office and breathe in this new numa, this restorative breath of life! Thank you Heavenly Father! It’s no accident that my experiencing Bishop Vashti McKenzies’ Praycation set my day in motion. It had a tremendous domino effect. This soul satisfying spiritual retreat with participants from varying locations was compacted into approximately 40 minutes of uplifting prayer, scripture, exhortations and testimonies that provided excellent, yes restorative fuel for life's ongoing journey. But it truly was an elixir for the day. And it’s virtual to boot! It was by no means a passive experience, but a morning of giving and sharing! The many words spoken quenched my parched soul!

After receiving this spiritual fortification from Praycation, it was no happenstance that I'd be in a discussion with a dear friend on what it means to battle effectively; as folks would say, “Batlin hard!” in spiritual warfare. So there it was a day starting with the tools for acquiring spiritual muscle, followed by a discussion and application of taking that exercised muscle and punching the devil out instead of getting knocked out! But how? Hold on to that question friends. I believe the Holy Ghost will reveal the answer.

Let’s fast forward to Youtube. My dear sister friend urged me to check out Juanita Bynum and Dr. Cindy Trimm as I began deliberately speaking to my trials with authority using "kingdom language." I listened intently to the videos. It was clear that God had woven a theme throughout my aha moments for that day, and it all seemed to point in the direction of appreciating the significance of words spoken and the impact they have on us-past, present and future.

The word “impactful” not generally used, I feel is the most appropriate-from the very start of the day it was jammed packed with words reverencing God and my having divine authority to speak life into dying circumstances. We are encouraged to fashion our language with affirmations, abandoning a defeatist tone and a smoldering diatribe. Remember your mother saying, “Watch your mouth?” Well I was a mouthy youngster and sometimes my childish remarks crossed the line and warranted correction. It’s no mystery that well intentioned words shape and color our perplexed lives! It’s a fact that praising God one moment and spewing profanity or cursing another moment will potentially rock our worlds. One remark cancels out the other!

Our world is shaken to the core with words uttered in anguish, words spouted in thanksgiving, words expressed in conviction and yes, words pronounced in declaration!

Our presence is important, but our words fuel the course. We are atmosphere changers-it takes words! Yes, these words mark us. They permeate the atmosphere and set us up for eternity. Our children’s, children will know the impact. Words can empower us. Prayerfully we are now transforming our speaking and our thinking. Our thinking is aligned with the realization that God is the source and strength of our lives. These profound words can heal, but more importantly they usher in positive occurrences and improved realities are then manifested.

Ask Dennis Kimbro regarding his success and being the bestseller of : Live Your Dreams, Think and Grow Rich-he’ll tout that in his book: What Makes The Great, Great; one is that prayer is the greatest need. The words of prayer which aide in changing our thoughts to alter our condition! There it is!

Powerful Prayer !

A psalm of David, regarding a time when David was in the wilderness of Judah.

O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water.

Words, words, refreshing words! Speak and declare that "God you are my God! " Relish in the natural and spiritual benefits of God’s Holy Word. As you break the cycle of negativity, take to heart that God's word will not return to you void. The more scripture you study, the better inclined you'll be to embrace transformative language and living. Be encouraged and meditate on all the attributes of a loving Lord and Savior!

Dr. Cindy Trimm says folks repeat what they hear. Don’t you love the truth? Change your destiny by changing your language. I have been enthralled with this realization. She inquires and asks the poignant question, “What are you feeding on?” And if I were to piggy back on that thought, my question to you would be: “What dialogues do you entertain with yourself and others?

Friends, never mind the grammar, it's good gospel ain’t it? Dr. Trimm says, we can download success into our day! So if we get in the mindset that we can decree doom, guess what? It will unfold! Imagine cultivating dread, pandemonium and being assured that and expecting it will springboard and blossom! It’s in our conversations, thinking, and actions! But the flip side is we have the power to manifest positive outcomes, decree and build formidable lives with wonderfully great outcomes.

Thank you Holy Ghost I am grasping this now. And Lord knows I want to jump up and down, because emotions have been the ruler over much of my conversations. But, today I am praising God for deliverance! Don’t tell me that listening to sage, anointed advice and reading scripture won’t usher you to higher heights! So here it is friends, if I think better of myself and apply these truths, God will bring it to past! Transformation is vital for our life and generations to come. We must select our choices. What’s your preference? Living or dying? I entreat you to choose life, it’s on the tip of your tongues.

It made sense that Paula White and Cindy Trimm are encouraging us to tape record our conversations! Many of us think that’s ridiculous, but what I am sure Paula's revelation is really reinforcing us to stop and begin to listen to our own words. These words are spoken often with no regard for the impact that they’ll have on us, our situations and circumstances. So if the words have hindered us and entrapped us, we ought to desire a shift, not to give in to the demonic forces that entrap us!

Let’s begin to break the pattern of negativity!

Whatever I bound in heaven and earth is loosed and bound! I must take authority
halt victim thinking and fix my thoughts. As Dr. Trimm says, “Press your ears to the word of God.”

Come on and get hungry! Where's your appetite for God’s truths: that we are fearfully and wonderfully made, created for such a time as this! No every day is not going to be blissful, but there’s no need to sit crouched in the dark room, shades drawn, awaiting the fall! We aren’t abandoned, but instead blessed and exonerated by His loving kindness and grace. We’re not thrown away-God is faithful. He is our banner, our strong tower, our help, our deliverer!

Success At The Foul Line

Amazing, Allen Geui!

Often when I read something regarding scripture and history, I realize how much I’ve yet to learn! Good thing I am generally eager and hungry to learn more! I love interesting facts and am especially appreciative of those folks that love spouting little known facts and entertain us with those by the way conversations. The moment that revelation hits, I envision my brain being like computer circuit board or better yet a tiny bud restored with the droplets of a new found, refreshing shower of rain! It’s time to contemplate new information, new thinking, brand spanking new information. I am sure that there’s a fascinating reaction occurring, growth and nourishment are partnering for new found sustenance. That’s what I imagine folks! And so when I read this commentary regarding Luke 6:38 my spirit was marveling in an Ah ha moment!

Barnes’ Notes on the Bible
Good measure - They shall give you good measure,
or “full” measure.
Pressed down - As figs or grapes might be, and thus many
more might be put into the measure.
Shaken together - To make it more
compact, and thus to give more.
Running over - So full that the measure
would overflow.
Shall men give - This is said to be the reward of “giving”
to the poor and needy; and the meaning is that the man who is liberal will find
others liberal to him in dealing with them, and when he is also in circumstances
of want. A man who is himself kind to the poor – who has that “character”

This scripture and the commentary are connecting beautifully with one of the kindest gestures I know and that is to share. So there we have it, in our bosoms, our pockets, purses we can give and receive. Give what? Carry what? Provide what you ask? Let me start by sharing an observation and asking you this question first? Can you imagine forking over 40k? Yes, no not 40 dollars or 40 cents! But, giving $40,000? In this day and time with economic hardship lounging in our family rooms, kicked back wearing our beloved overrun slippers! True we may not have that kind of money at our disposal but don’t let giving hinder that. Well many folks do it daily and don’t blink. It’s a known fact, that there are givers who enjoy doing so and are always encouraging others to jump on the band wagon. Collectively they galvanize their friends, create streams of giving, stroke checks or jump start foundations and off they go.Can you imagine in your best life having enough to share, no fanfare, just giving because it feels like the right thing to do? We are hard pressed on many days agonizing on how we’ll pay our electric bills and soaring cell phone bills. But whether we are clutching our purses or squeezing our hands tight change does happen. Just possibly not on our clocks. So if we embrace that philosophy we can give out of our need. What does the scripture encourage us to do:

“Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure–

pressed down, shaken together and running over. For by your standard of measure

it will be measured to you in return.”

Luke 6:38

You’ve heard spread the wealth and pass the potatoes. Ok I am being silly, but I believe that the importance of giving forward initiates that act. It becomes natural and like a domino effect.

Thank you Lord for one of the finest examples I recently learned of by way of the Compton Basketball star Allen Geui who dazzled his team mates, onlookers and others during a foul shooting contest that was designed to spark community support and provide college scholarships.

The contest’s creator’s intention was created to simply shine a positive light on Compton’s High School and dispel the negativity felt regarding Compton’s youth and culture! Google his name and this link: http://highschool.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1237085 to learn about his star basketball shot! This young man will cause you to appreciate all the more the concept of carrying plenty in your bosom and not withholding generosity to impact the lives of others for the good! So here we have it Allen Geui at the foul line, about to make a historic shot and change the complexion and dimension of true grit and character! He’s my designated poster person for CHARACTER!

Swish and there it is, no ordinary shot, no average basketball player! The successful basket is electrifying- the crowd is cheering, the arena is erupting, the media is buzzing, camera’s flashing, college recruiter’s high fiving and the relatives beaming and friends shouting with pride! Let’s not omit the oversized reward check earmarked for the winner! It was well earned and Allen Geui’s for the taking. ( No haters need apply!) But the moment doesn’t conclude there! It wasn’t just about singing all the way to the bank. Instead of coveting this moment- the realization must have been birthed in his spirit to embrace another possibility! Out of his boom moment, his resolve, flowed a wealth of opportunities to carve out a new path and stamp his signature on a new letterhead.

In a single moment and with a remarkable decision, the flood gates erupted and I am convinced heaven was applauding! I am not sure who ignited the compassion and heart for giving in Allen Geui; I am not sure if he fully contemplated the significance of his amazing generosity. But the evidence of it was clear with his insight to give, give what many of his classmates needed which was more than lip service about partnerships and team camaraderie; it was cash to attend their selected colleges!

Months after Geui collected his college scholarship winnings of $40,000, he wowed the contestants, several of which where his team mates by providing them with his total winnings.

Who does that! Oh my Lord doesn’t that just send chills down your spine? He realized that his teammates desired to also attend college and many of them hadn’t received scholarships and were in need of the funds. No dollars, no college! He changed that! Talking about giving it forward - and men shall give unto your bosom. This occurrence is indeed awe inspiring, it smacks of the biblical era of pouring into the pouch, the bosom of another and the recipient receiving the king’s reward, an overflow of the bounty! What an outstanding gift, both tangible and intangible. Allen’s giving will have a ripple effect for generations of Compton students to come! And I pray the world!

This young man has already received a college scholarship and I would not be surprised if this is just the tip of the iceberg for him. As the sower he’ll continue to reap a reward of magnitude proportions. His giving swells and spills over and touches countless others too many to know and too important to fathom. Just the act of standing at the foul line and including other contestants shouts winner! Let’s rally around this team captain! So the question remains, give what you ask? I say very easily- give your time, talent and certainly a few dollars to the almighty cause wouldn’t hurt! Just ask Allen he’s a young man with character and lots of ingenuity!

Prayer

Thank you Lord for the game changers in our lives that see beyond themselves reach into their pouches and encourage us by their acts of giving to strive, live, to dream and to never ever abandon hope for our best days are in front of us! Often they give what we have no means of. Thank you Lord that they felt the tug on their hearts, provided the essential resources for our good! Remind us Lord to follow your lead and will, when it’s our turn to step forward to the foul line and make life changing baskets. We endeavor to begin living with greater hearts, integrity and intentions of giving forward. Thank you Lord for your marvelous love and your word that reminds us that: However, as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him” – 1 Corinthians 2:9

We give all honor and glory to you and in your son Christ Jesus’ Name! Amen!

After reading today’s Values.Com quote by William Arthur Ward, I just smiled and cherished this light bulb moment! Mr. Ward obviously had lived and learned a few things. His wisdom began with an action, some involvement-doing. What tremendous counsel; reminding us extend beyond ourselves, our circumstances! Participating, not waiting to be selected. Helping: volunteering first. Actively believing: practicing our faith. Demonstrating kindness: even when faced with dilemma of whether things are mutual agreeable or fair. Forgetting the wrongs done to us: wow that’s a tough one for me! Working: stepping into possibilities of making dreams realities. I am sure you agree that life holds many opportunities to observe listen and learn by doing?

It’s a cathartic realization that the more active we participate in life the better the results are. Life will show us some things! Yes, good and bad. My friend Cassandra once asked me: was I being a stump sitter? I didn’t realize that I was passively waiting, instead of actively progressing. That was a punch and a dose of harsh medicine, it was needed. But I’m glad to report I’ve got my wings of faith flapping. Those words jolted me! It got me active!

There are slogans like “Play to Win” and “You Have to be in it to Win It! usually these sayings are referencing the lottery. But we know the odds are often a million to one for collecting those desired mega bucks. But the truth is someone does win the cash; it just might not be us. In slick magazine and billboard ads we immediately recognize: “Just Do It!” This is an excellent opportunity for me to encourage you and say, “Stay in the game of life and keep at it!”

Yes we might languish on the stump for a while, but that is not where our comfort should lie. I’d like to believe that each day is a winning ticket, an opportunity to hold on to our faith with a life-force grip of “doing”. A grip that is strengthened with a determination to realize gifts and impact the world with dogged persistence.

Each new day is another opportunity to take God at His word packed with His promises and our life’s lessons. Let’s not forget to relish the aha moments. Here’s a billboard which is a virtual graduation gift entitled: IT'S AN AWESOME CHARACTER TRAIT: PERSISTENCE. I created this for my husband; hope it moves you towards your heart’s desire. Remember Good Advice is all around us!

Priceless is what you are! We cherish your loving guidance, coaching, strong silence, active participation, unique discipline, direction, no nonsense demeanor, humor, finances and constant prayers. Because God has fashioned you, we are confidently assured! There’s assurance that you’ll share your heart and be there to celebrate our accomplishments.

Thank you for providing the needed support and love on those countless occasions…Yes, we know without a doubt that you like our Heavenly Father are a present help! Friends this is my birthday season, can’t believe that another year

has come and gone. I'm a Flag Day baby. Growing up in the 60's & 70's a

big deal was made of this day, we marched happily through the school

corridors, wearing our patriotic red, white and blue paper crafted hats

and each student was presented with their very own miniature American flag.

After our symbolic march to the patriotic music by John Philip Sousa

it was then my turn to distribute treats to my class mates and relish that

my birthday had special significance. That’s been many years ago.

But I still enjoy a big deal being made of my birthday, truly

I get giddy with joy about the attention and especially love giving gifts

to my friends as well. This season of my life has been filled with many

moments that were trying! But that's no different from others. Thank God for prayer (s) that has helped

provide me/us with a very different slant on what's occurring. I want

ROOTED IN LOVE

Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.

I just can’t shake it, it’s been several days since I witnessed what I believe was blatant self-centeredness, no regard for others. It made my heart ache as I witnessed this person’s oblivion to the folks that he was connected to.

No, I am not a clinician or counselor, but like you if we observe a situation long enough there are some astute conclusions that we do quickly arrive at. Discerning spirits is what I ‘d like to think we have. My elders might call it “plain nosey”, I label it “concern”.

Now this is no indictment against those that take care of self , look out for their own needs, but disregarding others feelings, emotions and needs for the sake of self (I argue)is a horse of another color. Alright I’ll get to it.

After shopping for a few grocery items, I agreed to meet my friend in the photo section of Walmart. I think you will agree that on any given Saturday, Walmart is jumping, there’s lots of momentum. That wasn’t part of my morning plan, but I obliged my friend and agreed to go. And who can’t pass up a great bargain on fruit and veggies! I eventually found my way to the Photo Department and there was my friend studiously positioned at the monitor and diligently, very meticulously selecting her many photos. She wanted to clear out her SD card and create room on her camera disc for future photos. “Good idea”, I thought. I need to get busy doing the same. As I leaned in to examine her selections, I could not help but to stop look at my surroundings in astonishment. Folks were intently shopping. A woman in a clown outfit was riding by on a bicycle collecting donations for the needy. Folks were enjoying their shopping experience.

Activities were all a buzz. People were moving about, children were skipping and the cash registers were filling.

Then I noticed a young girl in the shopping cart (much too tall for that seat), slumped but quietly sitting. What I believe were her two brothers, stood nearby and were more animated, chatting and enjoying one another’s company. They did not disturb anything, but curiously moved about. They remained a safe distance-not too far from their mother who scanned an old family photo. I stretched my neck to see what appeared to be a rather worn photo from “back in the day” as we might stay. Not sure if the discolored photo previously hung on the wall or possibly was rediscovered in an aged photo album? It was obvious that it was an important family treasure. It appeared that the grandmother was also present for this outing. Her smile indicated that the she appreciated the technology of reproducing the photo and the young woman’s skill at operating the scanner.

I later observed the grandmother's gait, her walking seemingly uneasy but determined. She dragged her stiff leg as she confidently pushed the shopping chart with the little girl ,which I bet could have sprinted down the aisles with no effort. I imagined they had a very special bond. But prior to that a young man approached them eating a hot dog draped with his favorite condiments. The young woman, said in a dissatisfied tone,

“You always manage to get lost.”

“ You’ve been gone a long time.”

In a sheepish, and not so apologetic tone, I heard the reply which expressed his disconnection and unconcern.

“I was just talking to some people I knew.”

Observing each of the youngsters, it was apparent he wasn't interested, not invested in this young woman's opinion as he ate his hot dog. He never missed a morsel, made no eye contact and never offered the children, the women a bite, nor suggested that they to come with him to purchase a snack. The children looked hungrily as he indulged.

The little girls stare succumbed to an averted glance downward, and what I surmised was a pitiful, but futile longing. What must she be thinking? The little boys tried very hard not to look directly at the young man as he lifted and the gobbled down the last bite of the hot dog. I began to feel bad, I was internalizing their disappointment, their pain and wondered why? Wondered what must their home dynamics be like.

So many things raced through my mind about a father’s love. A father’s love that crosses over a gene pool, reaches back-instilled from generations long gone and calls children that are not from his own loins “mine.” These blessed men that demonstrate a love that hungrily wants to make others feel good, feel validated, included and cared for are treasured! They have deposited love and have made a remarkable impact for healthier living! I earnestly wanted to yell , “What are you thinking?” And then I realized, he wasn’t! He didn’t have a clue or the unthinkable was that he didn’t care.For him it was just another occasion to wander off and think about self! He must not have known a loving father figure, a man with a forthright character that modeled unselfishness. Maybe he did? Who cared for him and others? Unfortunately on this occasion, he flunked the Are You Rooted In Love test miserably! It took a small gesture to demonstrate love! He could have done something differently or possibly said, “Later we’ll get a treat”, if his finances were low. It's not too late he can have a change of heart and do a new thing on the next go round!

Oh my, I feel a fresh wind blowing! Friends the very good news is, it is not too late for the multitude of others and this young man to embrace a new way! A new way of operating in the world and more importantly allow a new form of love and reverence to dwell, reside in his home, in his heart!

Where are the young versions of Daddy Wahab, Uncle Leonard, Father Ned, Big Daddy, Papa Bailey, Gramps, Uncle William, Brother Sam, Cousin Melvin, Mr. Jim? All these wonderful men that defy the stereotypes, and knew or learned how to love genuinely! We yearn for more of your love! Show us how!! Come forth elders and hurry young men. Lord knows we need you to lead by example. The families need you, the children miss you! We are praying for all the hungry, overlooked, love starved little children. We all need you to nurture and care for us! Help us to build each other up and cultivate relationships that are rooted in love! We are praying anew! God is waiting to guide you!

~Prayer ~

Lord help us to be mindful of not only ourselves, but others. Help us to yearn for it! To get it: humbleness, faithfulness and to harbor love. To grab hold of consideration and gain a new level of comfort as we endeavor to model it-model love and spread it on thick like we do when we indulge ourselves.

Help us Lord to see the needs of others, to value them and believe that we too will have our needs met and love reciprocated.

Help us Jesus to remember that we are yours and you are ours! You’ll always support us in doing your will.

We bind anything that is contrary to your design for our lives. And to loose hearts of thanksgiving because we are rooted in your divine love! We'll forever continue to give you the honor, praise and glory! Forever and ever.

In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord! Amen!

I love, appreciate it and have a ball actively and creatively expressing my values and my belief systems on the website: Values.com, The Foundation for a Better Life. They have cleverly shared a myriad of values we hold deep in our hearts no matter our lineage. After visiting this website, I want to jump on the bandwagon and stretch my creative muscles. Their inspirational quotes, billboards, stories and photos cause me to ponder and wonder how I too will share important and enduring beliefs that sustain me and sometimes cause me to reflect with thanksgiving. Just like when I was a little girl, I believed everyone in the class should receive a Valentine’s Day card, cupcake or whatever my Mama provided me with to eagerly dole out.

My plane landed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport during the Easter Holiday to visit with my family. As I walked the concourse towards the Air Tran baggage claim, there I sighted the wonderful Values.com Excellence billboard with Jim Thorpe. At that moment I wished I had had my college aged son to take a photo of me smiling in front of the billboard and to chat with me about the many contributions Jim Thorpe (Native American) made as a stellar American football player, and as an outstanding Olympic athlete. I encourage others to learn more about Jim Thorpe, it will broaden your appreciation for this man's character and his resolve in overcoming adversity.

Inner Vision: Chappelle Letman: A remarkable sculptor with eyes of faith

Mr. Chappelle Letman is a 21st century master sculptor, a true renaissance artist. Prior to losing his vision permanently in 1992 he worked in construction to supplement his income, this artist loved painting with oils which depicted nature scenes, cityscapes and people. Eight years later transitioning into a new reality of being visually challenged wasn’t necessarily easy for him. Mr. Letman recalled his loving mother’s promptings to excel and live his best life. She instilled wisdom and a sound work ethic which he continually exhibits. His spirit conveyed, “Don’t panic, have faith.” This life lesson carries over when he humbly encourages young artists challenged visually and physically to express themselves and not live by other’s dictates. He echoes, “Stay alert and use your instincts.” He uses his own words of wisdom which have prepared him for independence and creative expression. He’s surely humble, but no shrinking violet. His life skills coupled with California’s Sight Center instrumental instructions regarding technology devices and visual aids helped Chappelle Letman live life with dignity. His heart is open to God’s leading and his hands become the instrument for his creative expression which have been captured by the photographer Don Snyder. Art and healing is a phenomenal partnership. Chappelle Letman’s life is evidence that healing can occur if we remain open to what God reveals in our inner visions. He receives support and is in partnership with organizations that promote independence for the visually impaired: the Ohio Arts Council, the Cleveland Sight Center and Kentucky‘s American Printing House.

My husband, Richard is the apple of my eye, that's no secret. But, I am particularly delighted to share with others that he is a recent Seminarian and now graduate. Friends and family applaud this wonderful accomplishment. His grade school teacher told my mother-in-law that my husband was stubborn and then recounted that that was a good thing! I'd like to instead call his stubborn determination, persistence! I am so very pleased that he's continuing in his dream of not only achieving scholarly pursuits, but also actively serving others in ministry and living out his dreams! He's not timid about life. Congratulations!

Dr. Saundra Cherry has gracefully embraced her late husband's (Elder Greg Cherry) passion and dedication of preserving the noble legacy of James Apostle Fields (an ex-slave, educator, graduate of Hampton Normal & Agricultural Institute, legislator, attorney, and home owner where the first African American Hospital in Newport News existed). There is a continued need for the greater community to support this historic landmark. Dr. Cherry remains faithful and dedicated to the vision of preserving this historic landmark and museum located in Newport News, VA. Dr. Cherry believes that this mission is important to continue so that future generations can appreciate and celebrate the amazing life of James Apostle Fields. We’re extremely grateful for Elder Greg Cherry's zeal and love for life, history, culture and the arts. We salute Dr. Saundra Cherry for continuing to build upon the legacy of a noble man. The James A. Fields House remains listed on the Virginia Landmark Register, the National Register of Historic Places, and the Virginia Civil War Trails. Museum visitors have a unique opportunity to experience firsthand what the turn of the century life resembled for African Americans living in in Newport News. IT'S NOT JUST ANOTHER DAY!

This gift of artwork: Praying at Gethsemane, by He Qi, China received moments ago took my breathe away, I received it after I completed this morning's devotional from a parishioner: Linda L, who stated that she prays for me daily and hoped I’d like this farewell gift. Needless to say it brought tears to my eyes. I am rejoicing and humming (really loudly) Laylaha Hathaway’s song: God’s Been Just that Good!

I have seen you in the sanctuary

As I prepare for another workday, I am stopping just to reflect for a moment with you that it’s evident that God loves us! Think just for a moment the many love letters, signs and wonders God sends our way. The timely news received, the check in the mail, the opportunity to reconnect with a friend, the long walk down the hospital corridor to find your loved one awaiting your visit. Oh it’s so many moments in between the hustle and bustle of living that confirms God has our best interest at heart! Was it the hand that reached for yours when only a touch would do? Was it the comfort found in friends words? It was a miracle, yes it must have been those words meant only for you. It may have been those words spoken that pricked your soul and ushered you on to move just a little higher. Love in action was surely what it was when you were rattled out of your comfort zones. What was it exactly, the need, the search and then the gift received?

This morning for me, it was the moment I redirected my attention to a small book of scriptures entitled: God’s Wisdom for Mothers 2011 by Jack Country. There was no particular section of the book I was after just some reassurance. And I must confess that what I needed was found instantly in God Delights in Mothers Who Are…Growing in Him! Manna from heaven is what I found friends. This manna was the soul nourishment I was thirsting for found in Psalm 63:1-8 (New International Version):

1 You, God, are my God,

earnestly I seek you;

I thirst for you,

my whole being longs for you,

in a dry and parched land

where there is no water.

2 I have seen you in the sanctuary

and beheld your power and your glory.

3 Because your love is better than life,

my lips will glorify you.

Or was it the lyrics of CeCe Winans I then happened upon on YouTube? Her song More Than What I Needed was an elixir to my spirit. My prayer uttered:

"Thank you Holy Spirit for the direction and all that I received this morning and pray my friends will also partake in God’s loving signs and wonders."

Well this morning friends be encouraged as you delight in God’s promises that the wisdom we long for comes directly from the throne room. Be inspired because it’s not just another day!

P.S. No kidding! As I concluded this writing, in walked Linda L. (on my job) smiling and holding the artwork featured at the top of this blog! She announced that the art work was for me and she hoped I'd like it. She further shared that she prays for me daily! All I can say to that is, "Look at God!" Lord, Lord I am truly humbled! Just wait my friends your gifts are on the way, they will come walking in your door, unannounced, no fanfare-when you least expect!

WONDERFUL MAMA!

Probably one of the most difficult journeys I‘ve ever taken was my faith journey with my husband and son. This wasn’t just another intimate moment at the dinner table or a ride through the park; this journey was to a place I knew nothing about. Relocating to Virginia has been more than just a physical move it became a spiritual journey as well.

This journey has taken me to a place where God has gotten our full attention. Our faith walk is now active and underway. Together my husband and I embraced a new faith walk filled with God’s promises. More than eleven years ago transitioning from Buffalo to Virginia was a difficult for me, my support system and loving mother weren’t in arms reach, that was tough! My mother, Clarinda is an absolute jewel- she is a devoted and caring woman. She has been there for me when my world was tumbling in; she was my reliable tutor and backup for my son when he was a little guy. Mom is often my sounding board and trusted friend. When I need sage spiritual guidance and girl talk it‘s definitely her. Her counsel is comforting, never self serving and self centered. I love her for all of that, especially her independence and conviction.

By example, my mother has instilled in me to be a woman of hope and to desire and strive to live above mediocrity. There’s a big world with so much good to give and receive. She encourages me further to trust God, listen to my inner voice and have faith in the Holy Scripture. This is another birthday and Mother’s Day fast approaching. What gift can I possibly give a mother who has loved unconditionally and is continually been generous beyond measure to four children and now there are grandchildren and extended family? She’s traveled to Greece, walked the beaches and roads of Dakar, Senegal, road on the motor bikes in the Bahamas and tasted Swiss chocolate in Geneva, Switzerland. It’s easy to discern she appreciates life!

Mama, who like me, many years ago traveled from Washington, D.C to a place with her husband and had to quickly adapt. God was right there, even in her seasons of lack and loneliness- that was not the end! As a child I witnessed her stretch meals, beautifully create my Easter ensembles and kindergarten sneaker bag sewn by hand. My brothers and I were groomed to love learning and be respectful. She burned the midnight oil in undergrad and then graduate school. Our bed time was Mama’s study time! I remind her that she told us in no uncertain terms that, “I am not going to have dumb children, get those book bags out!” She laughs at that now. Many days she was under tremendous stress, but her loving disposition towards us never changed!

I am grateful that God kept my mother anchored when she faced hardships, especcially when my brothers and I needed her so much, when she couldn’t always lift up a prayer.

She didn’t topple over when life’s disappointments came. She continually assures me that when difficulties arise, “This too shall pass.” I marvel at my mother’s inner beauty when I think of her, speak with her and happily gaze upon her warm face. This retired English Teacher enjoys her friends and family, loves sharing books, a good scrabble game, watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. If there’s a challenge she has a word for you! Spirits are lifted with her genuine loving words of encouragement. In turn, I realize now I can confidently share with my mother the gift she 's easily provided me and my siblings to:

WHOLE HEARTEDLY EMBRACE OUR HEAVENLY FATHER,
HAVE AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE,
CONTINUALLY DEMONSTRATE A FAITHFUL LOVING SPIRIT,
STRIVE TO MAINTAIN AN ENDURING LOVE,
TUCK IN OUR HEARTS SCRIPTURES-THE SWEET LOVE OF THE LORD,
FOCUS ON GOD'S PROMISES AND
RECALL & REMEMBER THE POSSIBILITIES OF GOOD ARE INFINITE!

Friends with divine expectation, I believe we can continue on our life’s journey. My dear Mama has given me the wonderful gift of God’s faithfulness. I celebrate my mother’s legacy with you who are holding God’s hand as we journey with faith in our hearts and hope in our spirits.

WHOEVER DRINKS THE WATER

What an amazing gift to receive, nothing in a box to tinker with, no instructions to decode, misplace and then locate in our clutter baskets and kitchen cabinet drawers! Not a gift to dust, or safely secure so that it isn’t tampered with or like a fine piece of porcelain displayed in our bellowed china cabinets, but instead a gift of empowered life! Oh my friends this wonderful gift alters the course of our life and beckons us to stop what we are doing, to abandon our entangled lifestyles. These words Jesus spoke induct us! It’s a pronouncement of relief and serenity for a provision of eternal life.

Yes my friends that’s what this living is all about, this reflective Lenten season ushers us into the remembrance of some very promising words! Jesus spoke to a woman hiding out from her potential, stuck in dead-end and defeated relationships that smothered and hurt but to now instead embrace new possibilities of hope. Her encounter with Jesus was the hallmark for her experiencing eternal life not a temporal existence but on a permanent basis!

Friends let me encourage you to meet God at your personal wells, your places of trials, discomforts and ambivalences.

Trust that He already knows all about what concerns you. Let humility erect your truth with your words, underneath your words. Yes, He’s a prayer away, alive in the scriptures and in the language of love! Go on let Jesus show you yourself, but more importantly build a bridge to our all wise, all loving all, all knowing Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ! See you at the well!

MEET YOU AT THE WELL: HAVING A HEART-TO-HEART WITH JESUS!

¹³ Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, ¹⁴ but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
¹⁵ The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
John 4: 13,14

All of our lives we’ve heard words, words that have molded, shaped, prompted and prodded us to either to be at a standstill or words that literally gave us wings to soar. Not long ago I received an amazing gift from Ann Meyer, I think of it as a welcome gift to St. Martin’s Administrative Team. This gift was an unexpected literary treasure entitled Guerrillas of Grace-Prayers for the Battle by Ted Loder (see inside front cover).

Listen to Me Under My Words

O God, I come to you now

Asa child to my Mother,

Out of the cold which numbs into the warm who cares.

Listen to me inside,

Under my words

Where the shivering is,

In the fears

Which freeze my living,

In the angers

Which chafe my attending,

In the doubts

Maybe it was the Holy Spirit, maybe it was just a woman of God that sensed I would benefit tremendously from an inspirational book, or just possibly it was our preceding conversation about the office atmosphere that lovingly erects ministry and insulates joy, peace and caring! I don’t know, but I do know that when I read, I began to include this gift of prayers as part of my work day devotional, the words of the prayers scaled my heart matters and reminded me of how sacred my relationship is with God. It’s not taken lightly. So I easily connected with the prayer Listen to Me Under My Words. And really appreciate how God helped make the prayer so relevant to John 4.

So as I read John 4: 1-26 I appreciated the Samaritan woman’s frank and direct conversation had with Jesus. She attempted to earnestly converse. What really seemed apparent for me was that while she spoke, there were deeper issues- layers of words under her words which revealed her disappointment, her outlook, and ultimately her humility. Her sarcasm and loneliness were no stumbling block for Jesus’s replies. Her quizzical nature couldn’t stump or thwart the reality that what Jesus desired for her far outweighed her reality! She had stumbled upon a moment in time that changed her and many generations later to come! She visited the well at a strategic time that God had divinely orchestrated. Jesus’ words of life would become a wellspring to be reinvigorated, renewed and experience transformed natural and spiritual living! Let’s make our way with haste to that well! Don’t you want to go?

Blessed In the Rough Times – An Encore Post for Times Like These!

“Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation.” saith the Lord.

Psalm 91:14-16

My son phoned from his internship today with that frantic undertone in his voice. My mother instinct kicked in when I heard his voice. He tried to mask it with a cordial “Hi Mom!” but I knew better. Finally we got to the heart of the matter, he needed money for food and I really don’t have to tell you that it was only several days ago that my paycheck was received and now there is little indication in my account that I was even paid. I honored his request the way most of our parents do and sailed to the convenient branch banking location in my neighborhood supermarket to deposit something in his account.

"Thank you Lord God!"

I chatted with my favorite Bank Teller/Manager and after we discussed favorite travel spots, she too got to the heart of the matter- the words fell from her lips, I am sure unrepentantly, that her husband was returning to the Middle East for his third tour of duty. I learned that after I inquired: “Hadn’t he already been?” My heart sank when she shared a faint smile. This smile belied the apparent truth that her heart was very heavy about her husband's approaching departure date. I promised I’d pray for them.

After leaving the bank/supermarket with a few grocery items that had shot up in price in a week’s time, I just shook my head in amazement. There was one more stop before going home. I drove to my neighborhood Shoe Repair Shop that had not been maintaining their usual business hours. I quickly ran in the shop surprised that the door was ajar and wondered why there had been a sign on the door with the handwritten words Closed for several weeks?

The young proprietor confessed in an apologetic tone that his family was facing difficulty and he now worked elsewhere during the day. He shared that financially they were having difficulty paying their mortgage and his elderly mother now covered the shop. This was a rough patch! Once again I knew well about mortgage woes. But friends what really resonated in my spirit were when the young man said, "But it’s going to be all right I guess!” Without a doubt these are some of the most difficult times that this many people have encountered simultaneously in a while. It feels like more than a pinch, it’s often a strangle hold to stay afloat making a living. Yes, indeed it’s rough-it’s real, it’s personal hardships on an intimate level!

As our elders would utter,” But God!"

"But for the love of God!"
"But for the supernatural provision of God!"
"But for the undeniable grace of God!""
"But for the beauty of God’s word which reminds us that His love never foresakes us!"

Imagine an abiding love for you-his children. A love not predicated on status, religion or pedigree. No matter the personal attacks, innuendos hurled and/or the tumultuous hardships experienced God's wonderful supply of protection, grace and mercy is evident. Daily we can abide under His care: His Lordship! Wouldn’t you agree it’s comforting to realize this? His deliverance and most assuredly His love and shelter will protect us even in the rough places.

Hang on friends and tuck this in your hearts:

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is [our] my refuge and [our] my fortress [our] my God in who I trust.” Psalm 91:1, 2

EXPLORING THE MEASURE OF THE MAN

January 20th didn’t seem to arrive fast enough. We had marked our work calendars weeks before in eager anticipation of seeing Michael Eric Dyson. This was a great way of our honoring Dr. King and being able to attend a worthy and inspiring commemorative celebration in his honor. I couldn’t believe that we’d have the opportunity to see and hear Doctor Brother Preacher Teacher Michael Eric Dyson right in our own backyard! Right here at historic William and Mary College-literally down the street from work. This noted college campus is only a stone’s throw from work. We'd first have to return home to scoop up our son and mother in law-that evening, it was a family affair and we knew it would be robbery to leave them out.

Later on I would observe that the audience was a wonderful cross section of people all ages and ethnicities. The young, the elderly and the in between -their attendance was a sure sign that others felt the importance of bringing along their loved ones as well to witness and partake. Here stood this intellectual giant right in our midst and he was honestly frank and funny, just really real! Thank God for candor! Laughtern is not a bad thing either.

We were insured perfect seating because our arrival on campus planted us at the Sandler Center’s Auditorium before the ushers pushed open the locked entrances. I am pleased to share that we were not disappointed as I shared on face book! No shortchanging the attendees! This was without a doubt mentally exhilarating! For a moment I wondered, what must it be like to sit in this intellectual dynamo’s class room?

I was a student all over again and listened intently to Michael Eric Dyson,
the prolific commentator, the brilliant theologian, the insightful Sociology professor, the astute NPR correspondent and the best selling author who imparted his wisdom and easy humor as he poured out his heart about Dr. King. The word magnanimous comes to mind regarding my perception of the whole evening. Noteworthy is what the evening was! Dr. Dyson’s arguments and delivery regarding Dr. King were engaging. It was as though we too were drawn in dialogue about the measure of the man: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Click on excerpt which will give you a glimpse of the magnitude of our evening.

Friends, I wish you had been there! It was a no holds barred evening-a well balanced intellectual assortment! Dr. Dyson shone a bold flood light on the social and historic realities for a nation in the midst of radical social, civil and economic change. The food for thought shared by Dyson brought a revealing panoramic view of who Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was for America in his life and after his untimely death. I thank God for planting Dr. King on this earth!

Author of: "April 4, 1968: Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Death and How It Changed America.” is especially significant during this 40th anniversary of the life of our civil rights leader. As a result of Dr. Dyson’s presentation I am compelled to encourage you to read his website, listen to his telling interviews, acquire his recent book(s) and let's agree to engage in relevant and yes, difficult discussions that stretch us and most certaintly celebrate and honor the rich legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We'll certainly be all the better for it as we explore the measure of the man!

Sifting through my email was the unexpected! Instead of the multiple coupons and soliciting ads there was a surprise email message regarding my 2010 blogging history. It was mail that pleasantly encouraged and affirmed my blogging efforts. Refreshing! That moment it was the food needed to continue nurturing my literary efforts on Blogger and WordPress. Affirmation feed my soul! You too? Thank God for words that ignite our curiosity, delight our hearts and provide fuel for furthering our quests to reach our goals. It was as though the youngster in me was hearing a loved one say, "Keep at it, Lin!" EYES OF FAITH MAGAZINE-WINTER 2010 IS HERE!

Living with Greater Intention was the title that emanated months ago when I began to think about our second edition of Eyes of Faith Magazine. I knew it was no accident because God was being busy conveying that message! When I read scripture, listened to NPR, spoke to students, glanced at highway billboards, stopped and listened closely to lyrics, read St. Augustine’s prayers, discovered an uplifting website, the “intentionality” for living faith filled lives and impacting others for greater good was there.

God of life, there are days when the burdens we carry chafe our shoulders and wear us down; when the road seems dreary and endless, the skies gray and threatening; when our lives have no music in them and our hearts are lonely, and our souls have lost their courage. Flood the path with light, we beseech you; turn our eyes to where the skies are full of promise.

So I realized it was no mistake what God had planted in my spirit! When you think about all of the accomplished folks in your personal circles and in the world, what comes to mind about their character and calling? Is it their dogged persistence, their resolve that no matter what life flings their way it won’t hinder their mission? Is it their demeanor, faith, prayer life, outstanding creativity, insight, amazing, wisdom, wit, fortitude-what exactly is it? In my estimation it may be a combination of those traits! Certainly it’s personal, plain and simple! God has planted something deep down within them and it can’t be fettered. God has fashioned them to move from the fray, battle if they must but not wallow in the ashes of discontent, but to instead rise like a phoenix, hearts singed and surely better for the trial. Thank God for their fortitude and sticktoitiveness. Yes, it’s a blessed gift to live with greater intention.

So my friends without a doubt each of the selections you peruse in this second issue of Eyes of Faith Magazine know that the featured person’s life experience is verdant with promise and they are vigilant about their calls in life. We salute each of them for their wonderful endeavors. Learn of their passions and take heart as you too fix your gaze with eyes of faith. Go on and live life on purpose and with greater passion. We wish you God’s continued blessings now and in the coming year 2011.

November 18th was my last post. I thought to myself, “What in the World!” This was the stark reality that I had fallen off my weekly blogging wagon. Sobering life events, heavy workloads, hurried weekends, and fatigue pulled me away from this joyful activity of recounting God’s goodness. But I’m feeling empowered, energetic and so much better!

Thank God! I endeavor to get back in the saddle. Have you been there and done that? Allowed situations, cluttered thoughts, personalities to get in the way of your intended mission? Thank goodness that I hadn’t stopped writing all together, just not consistently blogging at my normal pace. But it's a fact that life can really drain and hinder progress if we aren’t alert! I wonder if our spirits shout, “Warning, warning alien experience ahead; do not yield!”

What are the yardsticks that you use to measure your personal progressions? Your promising health prognosis, surviving the family dynamics, the accomplished work day rituals, the private victories, abounding the public hurdles, relief from the absence of the struggle, the long awaited promotion, the peace wrangled, the renewed confidence, the joy reborn?

So many “yardsticks” to measure our lives! Thank goodness for restoration, today mine came in the form of a nap. Yesterday, it was concluding my season of working at the university. I am approaching a new season and concluding another. This is another transformative moment. It’s been a whirlwind of activities and if I hadn’t paid attention I would have missed out on my own milestones. What am I speaking about you wonder? It seems to me that often we are so busy living, being active that we miss out on the bigger picture, the important things of life.

Not too long ago I marveled at our friend’s an awesome photography of the fall foliage with the beautiful blue sky of Virginia as the backdrop. It was an excellent photo; the leaves were a kaleidoscope, a splendid tapestry of Mother Nature’s handy-work. Well Father Time stepped in and almost commandeered my window of opportunity to do as my friend and appreciate the wonderful of nature through my camera lens. In the nick of time the trees weren’t yet threadbare, a remnant of leaves remained. It taught me a real lesson of the importance in paying attention to the actual moments, people and activities that occupy the space I encompass. Let me encourage you friends not to loose focus by missing out on the presence of NOW- the present gifts of roaring laughter, completed assignments, scrumptious meals, connections with loved ones and answered prayers.

Below are some photos and links of aha moments recently experienced that were surely yardsticks that measure the quality of my life and cause me to realize that I very much am alive and well. To God be the glory for his loving kindness and infinite wisdom. He has once again provided me a life line complete with His reservoir of love, life, hope and promise. Get your rest my friends, then get busy celebrating your life experiences, surely you to hold a divine yardstick. Remember God’s love is immeasurable!

Standing under the trees and walking through the fall leaves was truly a treat. Witnessing this beauty was awe inspiring and to think the next day the weather drastically changed. The dramatic drop in temperature changed the landscape. What a difference a day makes.

I had opportunity to see Jonathan Butler! His music ministers to us about God's distict love ! He's been a favorite of mine for a very long time. I kid you not-when I was invited by a dear friend to attend a jazz concert, I didn't hesitate to say I'd attend. Not aware of who the artists would be, I knew it would be a change of pace from my standard workweeks. Oh my friends, what await me that evening was again powerful and transformative. I was pinching myself with other concert goers of The Dave Koz and Friends Christmas Concert held at the Ferguson Center for the Arts. What an amazing experience to see and actually chat with JONATHAN BUTLER! TRULY ANOINTED ! Thank God for wonderful friends! This was a super duper Christmas gift!

Quincy Jones on The Oprah Winfrey Show's

The Color Purple Reunion on November 15, 2010

As I perused Oprah’s official website in search of The Color Purple’s Reunion , my eyes scanned the web pages and I began to gobble up the words and the links for this phenomenal 25th reunion. Like many of you I too read Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel The Color Purple and was excited about the film’s debut and close proximity to the book! The pages came to life through the creativity and genius of both Steven Spielberg and Quincy Jones! The selection of the entire cast of stellar actors was indeed the icing on the cake. It’s been twenty plus years since the movie’s cast has assembled and was it ever a heartwarming and fun filled reunion on Oprah. Each cast member chronicled their experience and poignantly shared memorable moments and movie lines. Many things stood out for me regarding the film. There was no hidding the unspoken issues that were now on the big screen! Discussions erupted everywhere about race, incest, abuse and generational strongholds.

The creation of the project and the likelihood this project being a success or failure was also in the forefront. It's evident that those past discussions are now mute! The successful history of this film has spoken volumes for itself!

Oprah did a great job as always capturing and chronicling for the television audience and internet browser “The Color Purple” experience. I especially appreciated her interview with Quincy Jones, executive producer and composer. Let’s take a look at what he recounts:

"How did you know that this could become a film?" Oprah asks Quincy. "Because,
as Whoopi and I were saying, there was nothing like this ever on the screen."
"Here," he says, as he points to his heart. At first, Quincy says no one
thought he'd convince Steven to direct The Color Purple. "Everybody in town was
saying, 'Quincy Jones is out of his mind,'" he says. "He thinks he's going to
get the greatest director in the world on his first movie, and he's going to do
a black movie before Schindler's List. That's when I found the power of being
underestimated."

Does that conversation make you want to leap for joy? Lord knows is does for me! There it is friends in Quincy’s words : ".... That's when I found the power of being underestimated." What is he referencing? Let me take the liberty to clarify.

What’s pivotal for our emotional health, our thinking and understanding about being underestimated is your locating that source! Where did it come from? Who said so? Who said that we couldn't, wouldn't succeed? Reliance on this source is faulty, but can be truly deadly! Yes, detrimental to our existance! The source can take over our lives if we aren’t careful! It can block our true vision. But we’ve got to readjust our lens of faith-seeing past the overgrowth of doubt! Empowered thinking and a brighter outlook will give us our recognition of the wonderful and infinite possibilities of PROMISE, HOPE. Seeing God past the source of pain! It’s a wonderful seed of determination that germinates and grows and blossoms into results; events and realities that spin into Big, Big, Big occurrences.

I love how God speaks to us through other’s lives and examples. Through their testimony, our remembrances of grace in action, we are empowered with new truths. Like this morning’s visit to Beliefnet’s: Come Back from Let-Downs and Discouragements by Therese Borchard, these are life changing tools! The writer does a great job of assuring us through 21 ways how to overcome disappointments! These techniques take the sting out of setbacks. It’s very good medicine for possibility thinkers! We must bounce back! It’s imperative in order that we’ll see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living! Believe, breathe, get back in the race, fight the good fight as you get in stride, trust God, pray for enlightened thinking, block out those that are opposing your destiny and God will restore your weary heart! I declare it so! God will orchestrate blessings for the years you’ve yet to see! Just ask, Quincy and Steven, Zina, Taylor, Michael, ___________,Mary, Oprah, Helen, Ricky, Clarinda, Therese, Linda, Johnny, Drusilla. The list goes on and on! Oh yes, be sure to fill in your name also! Wave and lift those victory banners and pronounce: “I have what it takes! I will stand firm! There is power in being underestimated!” Glory to God!
